On Sunday  June 16, 2020, the country was shocked by demise of actor Shushant Singh Rajput, considered to be one of the most talented actors in Bollywood, being no more- death by suicide.

Shushant Singh Rajput was the biggest TV-to-film success story in recent times. And his death has indeed brought a pall of gloom in the TV industry, especially to many who looked up to the actor’s phenomenal journey.

 

Early life

Born in Patna on January 21,1986, Rajput had a keen interest in engineering, and according to him, he had ranked seventh in the DCE entrance exam in 2005, and secured admission in the Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) in Delhi College of Engineering. He was also a National Olympiad Winner in Physics. In all, he cleared as many as 11 engineering, including that for the Indian school of Mines.

But the lure of theatre and dance proved too great to let go, as he had also enrolled in Choreographer’s Shiamak Davar’s dance classes. Ultimately, he dropped out of DCE to pursue this full time. Acting classes by Barry John was his next stop. From then on, he performed in Shiamak’s troupe at various award functions, until he got noticed by the makers of his first show Kis desh mai hai Meraa dil, and soon landed the lead as Manav in Pavitra Rishta. His work in serial received wide appreciation, and Rajput received three major awards for best actor and most popular actor. Shushant also participated in various dance-based reality shows. He then went from strength to strength, until Bollywood came calling.

 

Filmography

Shushant Singh Rajput made his Bollywood debut in 2013, with kai Po Che!, for which he got rave reviews. this become the start of his acting career in Bollywood. His second movie was Suddh Desi Romance, based on live in relationship, after which he got featured in other movies. In, 2016 he played the role of Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni, in biographical sports film M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story. The film was a critical and commercial success, becoming one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of 2016.

After this Shushant also gave critically acclaimed performances in film such as Raabta, Kedarnath, Sonchiriya, Drive. His last theatrical release Chhichhore,  which eventually became again a big success and did well on box office, his performance was widely praised by critics. Rajput won praises every single time in a film career spanning seven years. He was also set to essay 12 real-life characters, including  Chanakaya, poet Rabindranath Tagore and former Indian president A.P.J Abdul Kalam, in a biopic series of india.

With his picture-perfect figure, he was the favourite for many magazine covers. He was the only Indian actor to feature in Vogue’s magazine May 2017 edition with international supermodel Kendall Jenner.

 

Tryst with science, cosmos and universe

Shushant Singh Rajput, besides his acting skills, was also known for his love for science and outer space. An alumni of Delhi College of Engineering(now DTU), the actor, even after joining films, kept his passion for science alive. His Instagram feed was filled with posts about science and technology. The actor, who admitted that he wanted to be an astronaut, was also a proud owner of an advance telescope called the Meade 14 LX600 as well as a new Boeing 737 Fixed Base Flight Simulator.

And his love for space didn’t stop there, back in 2018, the actor also had bought a land on the far side of the moon, in a region called the Mare Muscoviense, or the Sea of Muscovy. Last year, Rajput ticked off another dream from his bucket list when he visited CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, that operates the largest particle physics lab in the world and shared a picture from the Large Hadron Collider. Back in 2016, according to the reports, Rajput was the only Indian actor to received training from NASA for his upcoming Chanda Mama Door ke, a science-fiction space film, which he later withdrew from the former, citing date conflicts.

The bright-eyed boy from Patna had everyone impressed with his acting and dancing skills from the world go. Rajput was a rank outsider, with no film connections yet he proved himself. He was indeed an allrounder. The news of actor Shushant Singh Rajput’s has been an absolute shocker, his sudden death has caused a lot of uproar among fans. While the reason isn’t clear yet, unconfirmed reports suggest that he was suffering from depression. But it’s hard to believe that he did so… and no more with us now. We will have to live with this reality for the rest of our lives.
